Topic: Medium Access Control in Wireless Ad hoc networks Speaker: Jianfeng Wang Room: NEB 201 Time: 5:00pm~6:00pm, 01/31/2005 Abstract Ad hoc networks receive great research interests recently due to its potential applications and its difficulty to well address;-). The MAC layer stays between the physical layer and upper networking layers and plays an important role in the whole system design. This short tutorial on MAC aims to identify the baisc requirement of ad hoc MAC, the fundamental design goals and several important design issues such as link adaptation and spatial reuse. Basic contention based MAC protocols will be looked inside so that we can understand why and how CSMA/CA based MAC protocol works. After presenting the basic scheme, we go to several advanced topics: 1) how to enhance fairness and QoS distributedly; 2) how the rate adaptation, multiuser diversity and power control come into play; 3)what's the benefit and challenge to utilize smart antennas in ad hoc networks. Some discussions and open issues will be presented finally so it can help us to revisit where we are and how far we can go for the ad hoc PHY/MAC design.
